Sustainability Sunday #23

Switch it up! Moving to renewable energy for your home, it ain’t as expensive as you think… PROMISE.

Renewable energy is talk of the town, talk of the city and talk of the world really. As a global community, we’re still burning fossil fuels at an alarming rate, but we’re also progressing really positively towards a renewable energy future. There’s a lot of focus on businesses to move to renewable energy sourcing and there are some that are miles ahead already with solar panels on their roofs and commission plans for wind farms, but there’s still a hella lotta homes using up “dirty” power from the grid. We’re now in an age that is more consumer driven than ever before, so what can we do as individuals, couples, families and home owners?

We can buy renewable energy that’s what.

Now this is where I refer to my favourite guru – Martin Lewis, the money saving expert. He has the down-low on pretty much everything, but utilities, being infamously money-grabbing is one of his fortes. I highly recommend heading over to his site to find out what to get and where. When you think of utilities providers though, it’s usually the big names like EDF, British Gas and npower that come to mind. You may not even be aware of some renewable energy providers that you can buy from directly. Here’s my top 3, check ’em out:

1. Good Energy

Producing their own electricity solely throughout the UK, from homegrown wind farms. If you want to get gas too, although only 6% is renewable the rest is completely offset through international emissions reductions projects. When we switched back in October a dual tariff was only £3 a month more expensive than fossil fuel power.

2. Ecotricity

All Ecotricity’s power is green with electricity from the wind, sun and sea and gas from organic materials. They also have a feed-in tariff for people who want to make their own energy, use it and send the surplus to the grid – that’s all you amazing geeks with solar panels on your house.

3. Ovo Energy

For starters, while they don’t supply solely renewable energy they have a zero coal policy 👍🏼 secondly, everyone gets 33% green energy anyways 👍🏼 👍🏼 and thirdly if you choose the ‘Greener’ tariff they plant 5 trees in your honour 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼

Go get some wind!
